In June, a U.S. Air Force F-15 fighter jet crashed in waters off Okinawa Prefecture during a routine training mission.

Seven US military personnel are missing after two US Marine Corps aircraft were involved in a "mishap" in the skies off the coast of Japan.

Rescue operations are underway off the coast of Japan for survivors of an aviation "mishap" during a training exercise, according a statement by the USA marines. The Marine Corps said the rescued crew was taken to a hospital at its base in Iwakuni and was being treated, but did not provide any other details.

The aircraft involved had launched from Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni and were conducting regularly scheduled training.

"The search and rescue operations continue for the remaining six U.S. Marines who were aboard [the aircraft] ..." the statement said.

The USNI reported that five crew members were on board the tanker when it went down 200 miles off the Japanese coast.

Both planes are usually based at a U.S. site in Iwakuni, west of Hiroshima, where numerous 50,000 American troops stationed in Japan also stay.

An anonymous U.S. official said that one of the aircrafts was an F/A-18 Hornet fighter jet.

However, refueling is a risky operation, Baker said.

The incident is under investigation, the Marine Corps said. A series of emergency landings and parts falling from USA military aircraft have highlighted safety concerns.
