Wilder retains heavyweight crown after Fury thriller ends in draw

  • Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury drew their WBC Heavyweight Championship bout

Tyson Fury will go into Saturday's blockbuster heavyweight title fight with Deontay Wilder with a weight advantage of almost 50 pounds.

The three judges were divided on the outcome, with one scoring it 115-111 for Wilder, another 114-110 for Fury and the third 113-113.

Should Wilder lose his title to Fury on December 1, Fury must give Wilder a contractually obligated rematch; however, a rematch may still happen even if Wilder wins.

Fury meanwhile insisted he had done enough to win. A right hook to the top of Fury's head in round nine dropped the big man after Fury was showboating, daring Wilder to hit him. Fury retained the lineal championship.

Tyson Fury has targeted a rematch with Deontay Wilder at Old Trafford.

Fury by contrast cleverly picked his moments, finding Wilder with greater accuracy and causing a nasty swelling over the American's left eye.

Wilder will likely have to rely on speed to prevail having weighed in lighter than he did in his last fight against Luis Ortiz, the champion coming in at 212.5 pounds. There weren't any more big punches after that but the fact Fury was even able to get back up from such a vicious knockdown spoke volumes.

There is, however, doubt as to whether Wilder would take a rematch. Wilder tried going to the body too but, more often than not, his punches landed harmlessly on Fury's massive elbows.

The champion scored two knockdowns in the contest but struggled throughout to find the target against the tricky and tactically astute Fury, who used his superior boxing skills to control proceedings for long spells.

Wilder, having successfully defended his title, said he hoped for a rematch, either in the United Kingdom or U.S., and also extended the same gratitude to Fury for a fight that will surely live long in the memory.
