"The brotherhood, the alliance. can carry us to great heights", Netanyahu said at their joint press conference, inviting Bolsonaro to visit his country.

Netanyahu left for Brazil earlier on Thursday, where he will attend Bolsonaro's inauguration, and will also meet with him and with the country's defense and foreign ministers.

He plans to meet with Bolsonaro, who was elected in October with an agenda and style so similar to President Trump's that he has been dubbed the Trump of the Tropics.

"This visit to the biggest country in Latin America will strengthen trade and economic ties between the two countries", Netanyahu's office said in a statement. He also spoke of cooperation in military and agriculture matters.

Also Friday, Brazilian authorities said security preparations for the inauguration are the most comprehensive ever.

"It's hard to believe that we had no such contacts before", he said.

Netanyahu is then expected to go to a local synagogue for a meeting with Brazilian Jewish leaders. But neither man raised the topic in their comments to media, and no questions were taken.

The Palestinians view East Jerusalem as the capital of their future state, and most countries in the world back a longstanding consensus that Jerusalem's status can only be resolved through negotiations and as part of an Israeli-Palestinian peace process.

Brazil, he said, "is an vast country with enormous potential for Israel from an economic, security and diplomatic point of view".

The leaders said that the talks initiated Friday will continue when Bolsonaro travels to Israel in 2019. In 2010 the country recognized a Palestinian state.

Throughout his campaign, Mr Bolsonaro had pledged to dismantle Brazil's current gun legislation, which presents various bureaucratic and legal obstacles for people seeking to purchase firearms.

Bolsonaro and his team have excluded the leaders of leftwing-ruled nations Venezuela, Cuba and Nicaragua from the inauguration.
