China Warns Taiwan: Unification By Force Is On The Table

  • China will not 'give up use of military force' over Taiwan

"The goal remains a peaceful reunification", Xi Jinping said on Wednesday, speaking at Beijing's Great Hall of the People.

"We do not promise to renounce the use of force and reserve the option of taking all necessary measures, targeting external interference and a very small number of "Taiwan independence" separatists and their separatist activities, not against Taiwan compatriots", he said.

But Mr. Xi's offer of "one country two systems" for Taiwan is an important indicator that this will form the thrust of China's efforts in coming years, said Li Zhenguang, professor at the Institute of Taiwan Studies, Beijing Union University. Taiwan has never formally declared independence from mainland China, but relations have come under pressure since the election of Taiwanese president Tsai Ing-wen in 2016.

In 2018, the U.S. sent multiple ships through the Taiwan Strait - which China considers its territory but the USA and others see as global waters open to all - infuriating Beijing.

The primary objective of Xi's speech, said a Taiwanese analyst, is to send a message to the United States that China would not tolerate any interference from Washington in the Taiwan issue.

No one or no party can stop the trend toward unification, the Chinese leader said in a speech devoted to Taiwan, calling independence for the self-governing island against history and a dead-end.

On New Year's Day, Tsai said in a national speech that her loss at the November polls had nothing to do with Taiwanese voters' willingness "to abandon our sovereignty" and accused China of interfering in Taiwanese politics.

The speech closely tied the Taiwan issue to Xi's central pledge to make China a global power by 2050.

Xi said China is willing to talk with any party in Taiwan to push forward the political process as long as it accepts the "one China principle".

Mr Xi also sent a warning to advocates of Taiwan's independence, who include supporters of Taiwanese President Tsai Ing Wen.

Tsai said that Taiwan is willing to talk, but it must be with the approval of the Taiwanese people.

"It will only bring more opportunities for other countries". Ms. Tsai offered a swift rebuke, saying "the vast majority in Taiwan resolutely oppose 'one country two systems'".

"It's so obvious that they're trying to assimilate Hong Kong into wider mainland China in every way".

At the same time, "the ambition of China toward Taiwan has also increased", Mr. Wuer said.

MOFA urged the worldwide community to maintain its support for Taiwan and help it to continue to serve as a beacon in the Asia-Pacific region.

Should mainland Chinese indeed flock to Taiwan in 2019, tourism operators in KMT-led cities and counties could see significant increases in revenue - which will inevitably lead some to attribute the gains exclusively to the KMT's attempt to warm relations with Beijing, while overlooking ongoing efforts to attract tourists of other nationalities under the New Southbound Policy.

Beijing has adopted a multi-pronged approach to diminish Taiwan's presence on the worldwide stage in recent years, including blocking it from global forums and poaching its dwindling number of official diplomatic allies.
