"I think that's by intention", said Mulvaney, who is serving as the top White House aide in an acting capacity.

One of the officials says no new meetings have been scheduled.

Trump said that he would consider a deal that involved protections for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program recipients, but indicated that he preferred to wait until the Supreme Court ruled on the issue.

"What matters to me is that he recognized the Congress of the United States is the first branch of government, that we're a co-equal branch of government and that we are, we represent the people", Pelosi said.

Congressional Democrats have vowed not to give the US leader any money for the wall.

Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff called it a "non-starter". "We just have to see how it comes", Pelosi said.

Trump on Sunday held out little hope that another round of talks would bring both parties closer to an agreement.

"Let's get those [departments] reopened while negotiations continue". Meanwhile, 51 percent disapproved of congressional Democrats' handling of the shutdown and 33 percent approved. Collins and others are also up for re-election in 2020 from states including Colorado and North Carolina where views on Trump are mixed.

The House of Representatives was set to vote on the latest funding bill on Thursday afternoon to end the government shutdown, but put it off till Friday. But a Democratic aide familiar with the meeting said Democrats urged the White House to pass measures to reopen the government without wall funding and Pence said Trump would not do that.

Trump, who was not part of the negotiations, spent Saturday morning tweeting about the partial shutdown and border wall.

Trump told Democrats he was willing to keep the government partially shut down for months and even years over the wall.

He tells reporters as he departs the White House for meetings at Camp David that he'll be asking the companies to design "a lovely steel product" and "we'll use that as our barrier".

But Trump showed no signs of budging in his demand for $5.6 billion for the wall, which Democrats have refused to grant.

About 800,000 federal workers have been furloughed or are working without pay. A day earlier, the president had tweeted that he didn't care that "most of the workers not getting paid are Democrats". Democrats sought written details from the Department of Homeland Security on their budget needs; the White House said it would provide that.

Vice President Mike Pence had planned to meet with congressional leadership staff on January 6, but Trump said any developments related to his $5.6 billion funding request for the wall were likely to happen in the coming days.

Democratic Senator Doug Jones, appearing on the same programme, said the White House has not presented a plan to use the money.

Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin on Sunday warned of legal challenges if Trump tries circumventing Congress.
