Spain's Rafael Nadal in action during his match against South Africa's Kevin Anderson at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi December 28, 2018.

Nadal will play as many as four matches in Brisbane if he deems it good for his readiness for the Australian Open, from which he withdrew during his semi-final last summer due to injury.

Khachanov said of that setback: "I had a few chances opportunities in the first few games, there was a few times it was 0-30 on his serve".

ABU DHABI, Dec 29 ― World number two Rafael Nadal lost to Kevin Anderson at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi yesterday but said he was "satisfied" with his first match back after ankle surgery.

"I practised here and played real matches so it is a great way to start the season". The Serbian also lifted the trophy in the desert between 2011 and 2013. Anderson was pumped from the beginning and he got me fired up as well.

"It's not the moment for me to take a step back, it's the moment to make a step forward". It was very close. There was positive tension on the court today. Both players showed high-quality tennis, keeping the focus for two hours and giving the crowd something to cheer about in the last match of the 11th edition of this great tournament that once again gathered the best players in the world.

Djokovic will open the 2019 ATP-Tour season at the Qatar Exxon Mobil Open in Doha against Damir Dzumhur.

He has also agreed to play a Fast4 modified scores event in Sydney next week.

Anderson would go on to be beaten by Novak Djokovic, but gave a good account of himself in the win over Nadal. There are a few things here and there that I need to work on but pleased with the quality of my game throughout the tournament.

Earlier in the day, Karen Khachanov fought past Dominic Thiem 6-4, 3-6, 10-3. "I think we had some nice and exciting rallies". When you play someone like this at this level you want to win. "I am grateful that this season has taught me a lot about myself as a tennis player and as a person". It seems like he is feeling healthy, comfortable and physically ready. "The court is much faster here and playing in the desert with dry air the balls fly much more". It's tough to compare with Paris Masters because the conditions are completely different.
