Kuldeep, playing his first match in the series, picked up his second five-wicket haul in Test cricket, with his first coming against the West Indies at Rajkot in October of previous year.

Veteran Shaun Marsh is under pressure to retain his place in the team after scoring only 183 runs at an average of 26 in the four Tests.

Riding on the scintillating effort from Kuldeep, the Indian team also enforced the follow-on on the home team becoming the first team in last 30 years to do so against Australia Down Under.

The fourth day of the Test started nearly four hours late due to rain, with the home team resuming on 236 for six in reply to India's thumping first innings 622 for seven declared.

This was after Australia were bowled out for 300 runs (104.5 overs) in their first innings and were asked to follow on, surrendering a lead of 322 runs.

Peter Handscomb (37) was the next to have his castle toppled, catching an inside edge from Jasprit Bumrah's bowling, which careened into his pads and then the stumps.

Australia was six without loss in its second innings, with Marcus Harris unbeaten on two and Usman Khawaja on four, as an early tea was taken due to bad light.

Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood shared an entertaining 42-run partnership for the last wicket to take Australia past 300 for just the second time this series, before Kuldeep got his fifth by having Hazlewood (21) out lbw in the 105th over. Kuldeep Yadav took 5-99, making instant impact in his first game of the series.

Australia, resuming at 236-6, quickly lost 3-22 a day after their top order folded in a collapse of 3-24.

"Well bowled and congrats on your 5 wicket haul Kuldeep". Mohammed Shami (2-58) bowled Pat Cummins (25) with a ball that kept low on the sixth ball after resumption of play.

Ravindra Jadeja provided able support to Kuldeep from the other end picking up two wickets. Starc finished on 29 not out.
