Kevin Hart was all set to host the 2019 Academy Awards, until he "made the choice" to unceremoniously step down after some past anti-gay tweets surfaced.

In an interview on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show", released on Friday, DeGeneres said she recently called the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to advocate for Hart. "So let me assess, just to sit in this space and really think, and you and I will talk before anything else".

Hart appeared on the Ellen Show to promote his new movie The Upside.

He announced last month he was stepping down from the position and issued an apology to the LGBTQ community for his "insensitive words" from the past.

"I've taken ten years to put my apology to work".

Hart announced he would step down from the role later that day, saying on Twitter "I do not want to be a distraction on a night that should be celebrated by so many incredible talented artists. Because that was wrong".

In response, Hart said, "Leaving here, I promise you, I'm evaluating this conversation".

"LGBT people who love the Oscars were legitimately startled to see just how harsh his words were", Vary said. "But I don't believe in going backwards".

Hart told DeGeneres he would think about it.

But Behar wasn't feeling it, saying she had a whole list of other people who could host the show - people like Adam Sandler, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Steve Martin - before comparing the situation to Brett Kavanaugh.

In the next segment, Ellen said that she wants him to host the Oscars and that she even called a representative of the Academy to try to get him his hosting gig back.

Kevin Hart seemed like a sure thing - until he wasn't, after past homophobic tweets resurfaced and he didn't apologize.

"I have no problem with her interviewing him provided it is a real interview", someone wrote.

Whether or not The Upside actor will grace the Oscar stage remains unknown, but hopefully Hart realizes that the lesson in this moment can not be understated. The comedian said he wouldn't say sorry because he already apologized for the same tweets in the past. "I had an incredible and honest conversation with @KevinHart4real about hosting the #Oscars", she tweeted. "You can't let them destroy you and they can't destroy you because you have too much talent". The comedian was tapped to host the Oscars, but stepped down after controversy erupted over a series of homophobic jokes he made in the past. "I want to be done with this conversation". I've moved on. I'm a grown man.

"'Kevin, apologize, or we're going to have to find another host, '" he said he was told. The tweets suggested Hart would be physically abusive towards his son if he were ever to come out as gay. Cultured. I'm a guy that understands now, I look at life through a different lens and because of that I live it a different way.
