Matt Kuchar overcame three early bogeys that cost him the lead with flawless golf and two key birdies on the back nine to close with a 4-under 66 and win the Sony Open for his second PGA Tour title this season.

Kuchar is one shot clear of Putnam, who fired a five-under 65 and four strokes ahead of Stewart Cink and Chez Reavie, who shot 62 and 65 respectively in the Tour's first full-field event of 2019.

Kuchar added birdies at 10, 12, 15, 16 and the par-five 18th to seal the win as Putnam, who was tied for the lead after a birdie at 13, bogeyed 14 from a bunker on the way to a two-under 68 for solo second on 262.

Kuchar was sliding his way out of the top 50 toward the end of a year ago, when he failed to make a Ryder Cup or Presidents Cup team for the first time since 2009.

"I feel awfully in control of what I'm doing".

Here you can find everything you need to stay up to date with the world's foremost golf tour.

He finished at 22-under 258, the third-lowest total in Waialae history behind the PGA Tour record of 253 by Justin Thomas in 2017 and Jimmy Walker's 72-hole score of 257 when he won in 2015.

"I found some good stuff between seasons ... and then things really heated up in Mexico", he said.

Both courses require keeping the ball in play, and Kuchar has done that well over three rounds. His best season to date probably came in 2013 when he won the Memorial and the WGC-Match Play Championship en route to $5.6 million in earnings. But he had a good session with his swing coach in Dallas, and it paid off two weeks later on the Gulf side of the Mexican coast. "I just couldn't keep up with him".

He tied third with Americans Hudson Swafford (64) and Chez Reavie (67) and Canadian Corey Conners (64).

Jordan Spieth (MC): Spieth bounced back with a 66 following his 73 in Round 1, but it wasn't enough to make the cut (which he missed by one).

Kuchar, who had been winless for almost four years until his win at the Mayakoba Classic late in 2018 now appears likely to add a 9th PGA Tour title just three months after his 8th.

Matt Kuchar made it look easy Saturday in the Sony Open.

Svensson carded a nine-under-par 61 - highlighted by seven birdies and one eagle - to top the leaderboard at Wai'alae Country Club in Honolulu on Thursday. Kuchar walked in a birdie putt on the par-4 15th, and with Putnam in trouble on the par-4 16th, Kuchar put his approach to 11 feet.
