Lindsey Graham: Trump attorney general pick will let Mueller finish Russian Federation probe

  • Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein

Rod Rosenstein, the deputy attorney general, plans to leave the Justice Department shortly after a new attorney general is sworn into office, according to sources.

Barr's confirmation as attorney general ― a position now occupied on an acting basis by Matthew Whitaker following the forced resignation of Jeff Sessions ― would ensure a smooth transition, the person said.

If confirmed, Barr, who was U.S. Attorney General under the late President George H.W. Bush from 1991 to 1993, would oversee the investigation led by U.S. Special Counsel Robert Mueller, a fellow Republican chosen by Rosenstein.

Barr met with Republican lawmakers as he works to build support for Senate confirmation as the top USA law enforcement official, and is slated to meet with the panel's top Democrat on Thursday, according to a department official.

Last year, the White House expressed alarm over the warrant to spy on Page, saying it "raises serious concerns about the integrity of decisions made at the highest levels of the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation to use the government's most intrusive surveillance tools against American citizens". Text overlaid on the image reads: "Now that Russian collusion is a proven lie, when do the trials for treason begin?" Barr's opinion of Mueller is "very high", Graham said.

In September the New York Times reported, citing anonymous sources, that Mr Rosenstein had discussed recruiting cabinet members to invoke the 25th amendment of the USA constitution, which provides for the removal of a president if he is deemed unfit for office.

"I know the deputy attorney general has always planned to roughly stay around two years", Sanders told "Fox & Friends" co-hosts.

But he also has been a target of President Donald Trump, who past year tweeted out a picture of Rosenstein behind bars. He has long overseen the investigation and has frequently drawn Trump's ire.

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said last month that Barr's memo should disqualify him from serving as attorney general. The US Senate Judiciary Committee will hold confirmation hearings next week for Barr.

CBS News reported that while Rosenstein was planning to resign, there was no exact timeline for his departure and that he would stay on in a transition period after Barr is confirmed.

Graham said Barr told him about his longtime relationship with Mueller. Barr is expected to face questioning from Democrats about his views of the Mueller investigation at next week's hearing. His interim successor, acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker, consulted with Justice Department officials but ultimately decided not to recuse himself.
