LIVERPOOL took another significant step towards a first top-flight title in 29 years by thrashing Arsenal 5-1 to open up a seven-point lead at the top of the English Premier League, thanks also to Tottenham's collapse at home to Wolves.

Liverpool go into the match seven points clear of City at the top of the Premier League and Robertson, the left back who has been one of their most influential performers, expects Pep Guardiola's side to try to overwhelm them at the Etihad Stadium.

City shook off their consecutive defeats to Crystal Palace and Leicester with Sunday's 3-1 win at Southampton, where strikes from David Silva, Sergio Aguero and a James Ward-Prowse own goal sealed victory.

A run of three defeats in four Premier League matches has seen Guardiola's side slip from first to third in the Premier League table, severely damaging their chances of retaining the title they won with a record 100 points in May.

"We shouldn't focus too much on points at the moment, we know if we can play to our potential we are a good team", Kompany told City's website.

Chelsea now have a five-point cushion in the race for a top-four finish and defensive reinforcements are clearly needed in January if Arsenal are to compete for a Champions League return.

Since his transfer to Manchester United from Torino in 2015, Matteo Damian has been able to score just one league goal for the Red Devils. "Liverpool is not going to give us this amount of chances".

"Maybe I'm wrong but all players everywhere want to do well".

"I like these games", Klopp said. We take a look at the weekend's best pictures. "Sometimes if you prepare a football game, watching two or three games of the opponent, you still have no clue what they are doing".

"It's a massive step and just what we needed", he said. "We'll be wary of that but we need to be at our best and if we can, we can cause any team problems". It will be very hard, very tough, but for them as well.

"The red card was the worst moment of the evening; it hurts us a lot, it's a silly tackle when the game is gone".

"To come through December with the fixtures we had unscathed is a good achievement but nothing is achieved in December so we kick on now and go into 2019 full of momentum and it is about using that properly and if we can, hopefully it is a good year for us all".

"If we can play the way we know we can play, we can beat anyone", he told United Kingdom newspapers.
