Few athletes have had a month stranger than the one Patrick McCaw just had.
The Raptors are committing much less money than that, securing McCaw to a one-year veteran's league-minimum deal worth $786,000.
The 23-year-old was most recently waived by the Cavs earlier this week after signing a non-guaranteed 2-year, $6 million deal. It was the end of a weird saga that involved a half-season holdout, an offer sheet, a surprising release, and an ongoing investigation by the National Basketball Association into how it all went down.
The league plans to speak to McCaw's representatives on Thursday to probe into if McCaw and the Cavaliers reached an agreement to waive him so he could become an unrestricted free agent, sources said.
McCaw averaged 4.0 points in 128 regular-season appearances with the Warriors in the 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons. As a restricted free agent, the Warriors could match any deal, and that made teams wary.
No one is exactly sure why the Cavs chose to go through with that plan, but they are being investigated by the league for possibly salary cap circumvention. After clearing the waiver wire, the third-year wing became an unrestricted free agent. The NBA is reportedly launching a formal review into Cleveland's facilitating of these events, according to New York Times reporter Marc Stein.
So at the end of the day, the only thing McCaw accomplished was escaping a team that has won three of the last four National Basketball Association championships.
McCaw played only three games with the Cavaliers and was waived before his contract would have been guaranteed for the remainder of this season.
