Phillies in Process of Setting Up Meeting With Bryce Harper

The twists and turns keep coming in the public on-again off-again courtship between the Washington Nationals and free agent outfielder Bryce Harper.

The Chicago White Sox have gotten down to business and presented Machado with a formal proposal, according to USA Today's Bob Nightengale.

Jeff Passan of ESPN reported the White Sox may be willing to go ten-plus years, but Bruce Levine of 670 The Score reports that Chicago won't go more than seven years for either player. Nightengale also said the White Sox have yet to make Harper a contract offer while staying in "constant contact" with the biggest name on the free-agent market. This bit of information from Nightengale comes just two weeks after Machado attended meetings with the White Sox, Yankees, and Phillies in their respective cities.

The report characterized the long-term offer as serious and likely closer to $200 million than $300 million. With Machado already having very public meetings with those two teams and the Yankees, who have downplayed any interest in Harper, it's been believed that Machado would be the first to sign. Boras met with the Phillies during the winter meetings in Vegas last month, but unlike other teams, the Phillies didn't meet with Harper in his hometown. I understand there are some warts with any free agent, and that's true with Harper and Machado, but it would be nuts to me if they wind up signing a seven-year deal, even at $30 million AAV. It'd give Machado an average salary of well more than $35 million, the highest in baseball history.

Harper turned down a 10-year, $300 million offer from the Nationals earlier this off-season, and Nationals' owner Ted Lerner has been reluctant to go over that number, but a new report suggests there may be movement on that front. It will be interesting to see whether or not the Sox land him, knowing that they have also been "all-in" on Harper as well.

Does that mean Harper gets 10-years $350?
