  • National Weather Service St. Louis winter storm update as of noon Friday Jan. 11 2019

The storm is headed east, where it's expected to blanket Washington and Baltimore, forecasters said.

Snow totals are to taper to the northeast with parts of southwest IL forecast to receive up to 9 inches and the Chicago area expected to get between 1 and 4 inches. "St. Louis is seeing its worst snowstorm in five years".

Across the country's midsection, 50 million people are under a winter storm advisory, watch or warning.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 57 injuries and 4 deaths were reported in traffic accidents that resulted from the inclement weather.

Virginia State Police said the driver of a military surplus vehicle was killed late Saturday after he lost control on Interstate 81 because of slick road conditions.

The storm also prompted many airlines to cancel flights at St. Louis Lambert International Airport. Lighter snow is likely over far northern IL. Philadelphia is predicted to get 1 to 2 inches of snow, and there is a possibility of light accumulation in NY along the storm's northern edge. Parts of the state had received up to 15 inches of snow by that point.

In Kansas City ground crews spent hours clearing snow from Arrowhead Stadium ahead of a playoff between Kansas Chiefs and Indianapolis Colts.

"Missouri took the brunt of this storm", said a tweet Sunday evening from the National Weather Service station in Pleasant Hill, Mo., "but it was felt from the eastern Rockies all the way to the east coast!"

The storm is expected to lessen a bit on Sunday, but still drop freezing rain and some snow over hundreds of miles while moving slowly toward the direction of New England, The Weather Channel reports.

Ronald W Harris, 73, of Gainesville, Georgia, died after his vehicle was struck by two tractor-trailers. Illinois State Police said troopers along the Mississippi River across from St. Louis have responded to more than 100 crashes during the storm.

Almost 200,000 people were without electricity in Virginia and North Carolina.

In Kansas City, Missouri, 7 inches of snow was reported early Saturday afternoon.

As light snow falls are expected to continue in the Midwest, the National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for areas in the Mid-Atlantic until Sunday afternoon.

Jefferson City Police Department Sgt. Gary Campbell said between 11 p.m. Friday and around 2 p.m. Saturday, the department responded to 46 accidents. Governor Ralph Northam declared a state of emergency on Saturday night to help the state of Virginia prepare. Hundreds of thousands of power outages have been reported across Kansas, Missouri, Virginia and North Carolina, according to Poweroutage.us, and over 650 flights have been canceled as over 1,100 have experienced delays across the USA on Sunday as of 12 p.m. EST, according to FlightAware.
