Some TSA officers calling in sick

Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport typically has only 25 to 30 TSA employees call out sick each day; now, those call-outs are up 200 to 300 percent, a local TSA official told CNN.

"I don't care that most of the workers not getting paid are democrats, I want to stop the shutdown as soon as we are in agreement on strong border security!".

James Gregory, the deputy assistant administrator of public affairs for the TSA, said the agency is "not seeing any significant increases in average wait times or callouts".

Saturday's media dump suggested that scores of TSA workers failed to show up to work as the government shutdown hits the two-week mark.

The TSA falls under the Department of Homeland Security, one of several federal departments that have been without funding since December 21 when a stopgap spending bill expired.

Not only that, many employees who called in sick were out looking for work during the shutdown.

There are 51,739 members of the Transportation Security Administration's airport security screening workforce, according to TSA spokesman Michael Bilello. "Security effectiveness will not be compromised and performance stands will not change".

And it appears that an increasing number of them aren't having it anymore.

Even in the middle of the shutdown, TSA officers are mandated to work without pay.

Union leaders said Friday that hundreds of TSA workers at major airports nationwide are off the job because they can't afford to get there.

Gov. Larry Hogan joined the governor of Virginia and the mayor of the District of Columbia in urging the president and Congress to end the shutdown.

Thomas' union represents some 55,000 TSA employees, who screen approximately 800 million fliers a year; he is based at JFK. At Dallas-Fort Worth International, the wait time was slightly longer than in NY but still within TSA standards.

'This staffing crisis is negatively affecting the National Airspace System, and the shutdown nearly certainly will make a bad situation worse, ' National Air Traffic Controllers Association President Paul Rinaldi said in a statement. Airports struggling to staff checkpoints may also start reducing the number of lanes open to passengers, which will likely mean longer lines and waiting times. Known as positive passenger bag match, it presumes that if a passenger checks in and boards the flight, their checked luggage is safe, but some security experts are doubtful it is effective.

There are no indications that any of these measures have been necessary or implemented.
