  • The Metropolitan Fire Brigade in Melbourne has sent units to reports of
'hazardous material'

The packages were being examined by "attending emergency services", the Australian Federal Police (AFP) said in a statement on Wednesday, without providing additional details.

Hazmat and fire crews work outside the Indian and French Consulate in Melbourne, Australia Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2019.

"The circumstances surrounding the incidents are being investigated", said the Australian Federal Police.

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) said in a tweet that emergency services responded to "suspicious packages" at embassies and consulates in Australian Capital Territory (ACT) and Victoria.

AFP confirmed packages were also delivered to embassies in Canberra.

Victoria Police is aware of a number of consulate offices in Melbourne today receiving suspicious packages.

The Indian and United States consulates on St Kilda Road as well as the British, Swiss and German diplomatic mission are believed to have been targeted.

Officials at the US and British consulates separately confirmed suspicious packages had been received.

The Emergency Management Victoria website showed firefighters were responding to reports of hazardous materials at the British consulate general in Collins Street and at several locations on St Kilda Road, in the vicinity of the US, Turkish, Italian and Korean consulates.

Two fire trucks, a hazardous materials vehicle and police cars attended the Consulate-General of India on St Kilda Road where staff were evacuated, telling reporters they had been told not to comment to reporters.

A spokeswoman for the service said: "We are assisting the Australian Federal Police right now with a number of incidents across Melbourne".

Emergency services attended consulates across Melbourne's central busy district and the inner city.

Addresses for the events include Market Street, Bourke Street, Middleton Lane, William Street, and St Kilda Road in Melbourne, Elgin Street at Carlton, and Yertchuk Avenue at Ashwood.

The ministry said staff were evacuated as a precautionary measure.

On Monday, suspicious parcels containing a white substance were sent to Argentina's consulate in Sydney.
