That will occur in the wake of the winter storm that may lay a swath of disruptive snow from the Midwest, Chicago included, to a part of the Northeast early next week.

A preview of the expected storm hit on Friday morning, prompting multiple school closures in the Midwest and temperatures of -27 degrees Celsius in Duluth, Minnesota and -20 degrees Celsius in Chicago, Illinois, the largest city in the Midwest.

The Chicago National Weather Service tweeted about record-breaking cold on Sunday. Accuweather notes that residents near Lake Michigan and Lake Superior in particular should be on the lookout for snow showers streaming off the lakes.

"I can not stress how dangerously cold it will be", said Mike Doll, a senior meteorologist at AccuWeather. Strong winds with gusts past 50 miles per hour are possible between eastern Montana to Nebraska and Kansas from Sunday through Monday, Accuweather reported.

"The end of January will bring the coldest air of the season for the Midwest and rival the Arctic blast from earlier this week as the coldest in the Northeast".

While parts of the United States of America have experienced some extreme weather in the last few weeks, locals in specific parts of the country have been warned to expect a life-threatening polar vortex to arrive in the next few days.

The polar vortexes, rotating counter-clockwise relative to the earth's orbit around the Sun around the planet's poles, help keep temperatures low in these regions.

Motorists should only travel with a winter survival kit in the event you break down and have to wait for help. In fact, warm air can actually push around and disturb these polar winds, ultimately throwing them in our direction. But in winter, the vortex can expand dramatically, carrying cold air south with the jet stream. "We expect lobes to spill out over time".

This cold air usually stays in place high above the Arctic surface.

A deep freeze is forecast to hit the U.S. Midwest this week, with snow, brutally cold temperatures and potentially life-threatening wind chill across northern IL and northwest IN by midweek, the National Weather Service said.

"It will be there all week long, and then things get better next week", he said.

While low temperatures on their own don't necessarily complicate travel plans, the combination of freezing cold, snow, and interruptions related to the ongoing government shutdown could make next week a bad time to catch a flight or drive cross-country.
