The Denver Broncos have narrowed their coaching search to Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Vic Fangio and Pittsburgh Steelers offensive line coach Mike Munchak, sources told ESPN. Broncos executive John Elway hired Fangio to lead a talented defense led by pass rushers Von Miller, a three-time All-Pro and seven-time Pro Bowler, and Bradley Chubb, who logged 12 sacks as a rookie after being drafted fifth overall in 2018.

Fangio came to Chicago before the 2015 season after not getting the head coaching job with the 49ers, where he was the defensive coordinator for the previous four years. At 60 years old, Fangio is among the oldest head coaches in the league when so many teams are looking to go with younger offensive coaches or even dive into the pool of college candidates.

After stints with five National Football League teams from 1986-2009, Fangio left in 2010 to become the defensive coordinator for the Stanford Cardinal.

The team began searching for a new coach on December 31 after Vance Joseph was sacked from the position.

He went 21-11 as the team's head coach.

Fangio has turned Bears" defense into a ferocious unit, one that has echoed the legendary "85 Bears squad.

In 1979, Fangio got his start in coaching, as a high school linebackers coach.

"You want what's best for people", Bears safety Adrian Amos said Monday as Fangio interviewed with the Broncos.

Defensive lineman Akiem Hicks echoed those thoughts.

This is a team that was built on defense last season.

After news broke, Bears receiver Allen Robinson shared his thoughts on Twitter. Once again the Fangio effect was real, as the Bears made drastic improvements under his defensive tutelage ranking in at No. 14, 15 and 10 in the following three seasons.

And if the Broncos can't eventually get back on track with Fangio in charge, Elway, having taken the road less traveled in the 2019 coaching cycle and in total control, should start to worry about his own job security.
