Amazon reportedly reconsidering New York City headquarters

  • Gov. Cuomo fires broadsides at Senate Dems over Amazon opposition and taxes

Amazon has not yet returned a request for comment from Fox News, but it did tell TechCrunch it is "focused on engaging with our new neighbors - small business owners, educators, and community leaders".

Amazon may abandon its plan to build a new headquarters in New York City in the face of furious local opposition, according to reports in the United States media.

Amazon executives have had internal discussions recently to reassess the situation in NY and explore alternatives, the Post reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

"The question is whether it's worth it if the politicians in NY don't want the project, especially with how people in Virginia and Nashville have been so welcoming", one person familiar with the company's plans told WaPo.

"Chicago was initially considered for Amazon's new headquarters and the economic opportunity is certainly welcome here", Preckwinkle was quoted as saying.

Critics also say the project would drive up rent and tax New York's already troubled transit system.

Amazon is moving forward with plans to construct another headquarters in Arlington, Virginia, near the nation's capital.

After facing opposition from lawmakers and residents, Amazon might not built its second headquarters in NY after all. "Because it is so ironic for Amazon, after they spent one year with everyone seducing them, and everyone courting them, we win and then there's political opposition".

The power struggle between Gov. Cuomo, the New York State Senate, and the Public Authorities Control Board is very much ongoing.

In a statement on Friday, Amazon said it was working to engage with New Yorkers, but did not discuss whether it would change its plans.

On Friday, Cuomo reacted angrily when asked during a pre-planned, unrelated news conference about the possibility that Amazon might bail on NY. The company could certainly skip over to Newark and re-open talks to place its offices there, if only to loosen resistance in New York City. Protestors also disrupted the hearing.

In one sign of opposition, artists spray-painted Amazon's logo - spelled "AMAZNO" - on streets near the proposed site.

The e-commerce giant announced in November that it would split its second headquarters between New York's Long Island City and Northern Virginia.

The company, which announced a year ago that it had chosen a site in Long Island City to house 25,000 employees, has not leased or purchased office space for the project yet, making it easy to withdraw the commitment, according to the Washington Post.

Amazon hasn't made things easier for itself with the company's outright refusal at recent community board meetings to unionize its workforce. Plus, adding 25,000 high-paying jobs to this corner of Queens will only make gentrification worse, activists warn.

Contrast the opposition in NY with the welcome in Virginia, and you can see why Amazon executives are reconsidering their choice.

After receiving the bad news, Emanuel acknowledged that subsidies were at least a part of the reason why Chicago lost the Amazon sweepstakes.

Sure, Amazon shimmied into Virginia and got everything it wanted.
