  • England World Cup winner Gordon Banks has died aged 81

He is perhaps best remembered for pulling off a seemingly impossible save to keep out Pele when England played Brazil in the 1970 World Cup tournament.

Banks' family released a statement through his former club Stoke City on Tuesday, confirming the 81-year-old had "passed away peacefully overnight".

Banks made 510 league appearances for Chesterfield, Leicester and Stoke and won 73 senior worldwide caps.

"Gordon will be deeply missed and our thoughts are with his family at this very sad time".

The goalkeeper starred in England's 4-2 World Cup final victory over West Germany in 1966.

While his slender frame meant he was not the most imposing of goalkeepers, Banks's movement and agility saw him command his area.

Banks is famously known for his outstanding save from Pele during England's quarter final match with Brazil in 1970. "At first I thought, 'You lucky so-and-so, ' but then I realized it has been a bit special".

Soon after Banks' death was announced, football fans and others began taking flowers and scarves to the life-size statue of him outside the Stoke City stadium.

Mr Banks was named Football Writers' AssociationFootballer of the Year in 1972 and was named FIFA Goalkeeper of the Year on six occasions.

As well as starring for Leicester City and Stoke City, Banks earned 73 caps for his country and was England's starting goalkeeper as they won the World Cup on home soil in 1966.

Legendary England global keeper Gordon Banks, who made one appearance for Scarborough FC, has sadly passed away aged 81.

Southgate - who reignited the kind of modesty of spirit and fairplay engendered by the 1966 side that has been largely missing in England teams since that era - said he had enjoyed spending time with an "all-time great".

Get the latest sports news updates. While it was indeed phenomenal, my memory of Gordon is not defined by that - it is defined by his friendship.

The former Stoke City man was also incredible at saving penalties.

I have great sadness in my heart today and I send condolences to the family he was so proud of.

Former England player Michael Owen called him "one of the game's true gentleman".
