In a normal situation, Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax would be elevated to the Governor's Mansion until the end of Northam's term but Fairfax is dealing with a scandal of his own.

Rep. Don Beyer, also of Virginia, said he is inclined to believe Tyson, but would not call on Fairfax to resign.

Under state law, the lieutenant governor may be impeached by the House of Delegates and prosecuted before the Senate for malfeasance in office, corruption, neglect of duty, or other high crimes and misdemeanor. Brown had invited Smith and other Duke alumni to a campaign fundraiser for Fairfax, and Watson wrote back to her: "Molly, Justin raped me in college and I don't want to hear anything about him".

Meredith Watson alleged that Fairfax's assault on her was "premeditated and aggressive" when they both attended Duke in 2000 and that the two were friends but not romantically involved, according to a statement from her legal counsel, the firm Smith Mullen. Fairfax denies the allegations.

"I felt a responsibility to myself, the beloved students I teach, and the courageous women I've tried to help overcome their own trauma", she wrote. Fairfax has denied the second allegation declaring, "I will not resign".

Bottom line: I think Tyson's telling the truth but I don't feel confident enough absent contemporary evidence to risk ruining Fairfax's life over it.

Fairfax vowed to clear his "good name", and noted he has passed Federal Bureau of Investigation background checks and run for office "with nothing like this being raised before".

The improbable scenario of the governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general being forced to resign en masse has raised the prospect of the Democrats losing the governorship to a Republican without an election.

Vanessa Tyson says Fairfax forced her to perform oral sex on his during the 2004 Democratic National Convention.

The state's former Democratic governor, Terry McAuliffe, said the allegations against Mr Fairfax "are serious and credible" and called for his "immediate resignation".

Lt. Governor Fairfax has also shown exceptionally poor judgment in his handling of these allegations.

For his part, Lt. Gov. Fairfax has adamantly denied Watson's accusation. "Despite all of the distractions from the continuing controversies involving our statewide elected officials, I am intent on fulfilling the work of the people of Virginia by passing a fiscally responsible budget that provides tax relief for working families".

Northam, a former US Army doctor who took office a year ago, has resisted mounting pressure to resign since a racist photo from his 1984 medical school yearbook page surfaced last week. He did not appear in the photo, Northam said, but dressed up in blackface in another incident for a Michael Jackson costume.

He recalled wanting to address what he saw as a lack of political action on campus, especially during U.S. Supreme Court justice Brett Kavanaugh's hearings for sexual-assault allegations. Herring had previously called on Northam to resign and came forward after rumors about the existence of a blackface photo of him began circulating at the Capitol.

Regarding the allegation against Fairfax, the district attorney's office in Boston declined to say whether it is investigating.

All week, Democrats and Republicans have been treading carefully regarding Tyson's allegation, unsure what to believe because Tyson offered no corroborating evidence.
