Mickelson had a three-shot lead over Paul Casey with two holes to play when it was too dark too finish Sunday night because of delays from rain and a hail storm.

Mickelson won at Pebble Beach for the fifth time, matching the record set by Mark O'Meara.

His brilliant play still shared the stage with weather that was freaky even by Pebble standards. Just as he and Casey were about to tee off for the start of their round on Sunday, severe weather hit the Monterey Peninsula, covering Pebble Beach in hailstones.

Mickelson is one of three players looking to complete their collection of all four majors this year.

Joining Casey and Mickelson on the course Monday was Don Colleran, a FedEx executive who with Casey led the two-man Pro-Am competition by one stroke at 33-under-par. "Let's play 17 and see how it goes".

The American is on 18 under with two holes left to play, with playing partner Paul Casey on 15 under.

"He really protected both of us". The greens were beat up. "We're going to have a good chance to come out on fresh greens". "I don't want to jump the gun and look ahead".

The victory, Mickelson's first since the WGC-Mexico Championship last March and first on US soil in six years, carries special significance for him.

"The ball striking was very good but I didn't putt well at all this week".

It's the course where his grandfather worked as a caddie and where he began his pro career.

Overlooking the Pacific Ocean, the Pebble Beach Golf Links is celebrating its 100-year anniversary this year. The US Open remains the final piece missing for him to complete the career Grand Slam, though Lefty was quick to caution that this week had no bearing on this summer.

Mickelson has come close, with six runner-up finishes at the U.S. Open.

Although suspended play didn't last six months, as it did for Mickelson at Pebble in 1998, he had seemed frustrated at the decision to suspend play Sunday, with Casey arguing the other point. Mickelson poured it on, showing his skills have not deteriorated a bit at age 48, controlling spin beautifully to back pin positions. "[It means] absolutely nothing", he said.

"The name of the game is you've got to make putts and you've got to roll it", Woods said after the second round, according to ESPN. I'm hitting drivers and trying to bomb it down there and hit wedges in, and the rough will be so different and the greens will be so firm it will be a whole different golf course.
