MLB hoping to invigorate the sport with rule changes

While numerous proposed changes like the universal DH and a single trade deadline seem like great ideas, there is one suggestion that made me cringe.
The Major League Baseball Players Association reportedly proposed a universal designated hitter as part of its back-and-forth with the league regarding rule changes for the upcoming season, according to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal.
So National League supporters and baseball purists have until at least 2022 to enjoy watching pitchers step into the batter's box and take some hacks.
In addition to a universal designated hitter, the MLBPA's proposal addressed service-time manipulation and suggested a penalty for teams that are not competitive, according to Rosenthal.
Speaking Friday at the end of an owners' meeting, Manfred says he is encouraged the players' association responded to management's proposal for a pitch clock and a three-batter minimum for a relief pitcher unless an inning ends.
There's no guarantee any of those changes will be implemented in 2019.
But following three years of attendance drops and with the sport in the midst of the second slow free agent market, both sides are more willing than last offseason to exchange ideas.
No agreement to changes has yet been reached, though the current collective bargaining agreement gives commissioner Rob Manfred power to unilaterally implement certain changes regardless of how the talks progress.
