Nissan promised £80m to build cars in Sunderland

Back in 2016, Nissan thought it made good business sense to manufacture the X-Trail in both Sunderland and Kyushu (Japan), particularly after the United Kingdom gave it "reassurances" about life post-Brexit, but that's no longer the case.

Nissan sought to allay concerns of its Sunderland employees, saying it will go ahead with planned spending on the Juke and Qashqai models.

A letter from the government to Nissan, written in 2016, revealed that the Japanese carmaker would only get the money if they made the vehicle in the UK.

Nissan said the continued uncertainty around the UK's future relationship with the European Union "is not helping companies like ours to plan for the future", prompting renewed fears among some in Britain that Brexit was hitting the economy.

Nissan's decision not build its new X-Trail vehicle in Sunderland means that 741 additional jobs will no longer be created, Business Secretary Greg Clark has said.

Its original plan, announced in 2016, was seen as a big vote of confidence in post-Brexit Britain. 'This represents a serious blow to the communities that depend on the jobs Nissan creates and supports, ' Keir Starmer, the opposition Labour Party's Brexit spokesman, wrote on Twitter.

"While I'm pleased the decision taken in 2016 to build the Qashqai and secure the Sunderland plant is unchanged, it's deeply disappointing to me and to the workforce that the extra jobs that would have come from the X-Trail will no longer be available".

The company blamed wider industry pressures but added that Brexit "uncertainty" was not helping it to plan for the future. The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders said last week that the industry was on "red alert" after investment and production plunged.

Meanwhile, pro-EU and pro-Brexit politicians traded allegations about whether Nissan's decision not to build a new SUV in northern England was the latest sign of Brexit-induced economic damage. Overall production at Sunderland a year ago stood at over 442,000, down nearly 11% on 2017.

As Nissan make a U-turn and say sayonara to building the X-trail in Sunderland, the government is left deeply embarrassed. The X-Trail production plans had been announced in the autumn of 2016.

Current production in Sunderland includes the Nissan Leaf, Europe's best-selling electric auto, which reached a record 46,989 units last year, up 177 per cent from the previous year, according to the company.

Unite the Union, the UK's second largest labor union which also represents Sunderland workers, was disheartened at Nissan's decision.
