Recently appearing on CBS program "Face the Nation", Trump told journalist Margaret Brennan that he wanted to have USA servicemembers stay in Iraq because he wants to keep a watchful eye on Iran.

The US could rely heavily on intelligence work in Afghanistan, he said, and respond to developments in Syria from US bases in neighbouring Iraq.

Mr. Trump, however, told CBS' "Face the Nation" that if the groups gain power, the USA could "come back if we have to".

"This is what a lot of people don't understand", added Trump."We're going to keep watching, and we're going to keep seeing, and if there's trouble-if somebody is looking to do nuclear weapons or other things-we're going to know it before they do".

In an interview on the CBS network, Mr Trump spoke of the "endless wars" in Syria and Afghanistan and made clear he wanted to reduce the costly U.S. military presence in those countries, despite warnings against such moves from his military advisers and spy chiefs.

In an interview with CBS television, Trump reaffirmed his determination to pull the United States out of "endless wars" in Syria and Afghanistan, but said USA troops would stay on in Iraq, partly "to be looking a little bit at Iran".

Pro-Iran politicians with strong Shiite militia backing have pledged to push out USA forces through legislation passed by Iraq's parliament, but they have increasingly expressed a willingness for armed confrontation.

After a bitterly disputed vote, the USA brokered a power-sharing agreement between Ghani and Abdullah in 2014.

"We do have to keep pressure on this network", Voted told senators.

President Trump announced in December that the military would withdraw from Syria, but according to the Defense Department, approximately 2,000 ISIS fighters remained where US forced had previously been operating.

Trump, who imposed sanctions on Iran previous year after pulling the United States out of the 2015 nuclear agreement, mentioned the future plans for US troops in Iraq in an interview that aired before the Super Bowl.

He gave the committee assurances that the USA will seek to protect the US -backed Syrian Democratic Forces, who have led the fight against ISIS in Syria, and the Syrian-Kurdish fighters within the SDF.

Votel said on Tuesday that the militant group retained leaders, fighters, facilitators and resources that will continue to fuel a menacing insurgency.

Trump also tasked the Pentagon late past year to start making plans for cutting the USA force in Afghanistan in half.

But during his visit to the Iraqi air base Trump said he had "no plans at all" to remove US forces from Iraq.

"We have very fast airplanes, we have very good cargo planes". Many Iraqi officials saw the visit and the Trump's comments as affronts to Iraq's sovereignty.

But Trump's planned meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi was canceled over a dispute about the location of the meeting. "There are only Iraqi bases where some United States and non-US soldiers are present".

This is not the first time the Iran-backed militants in Iraq claim to have challenged the US troops in Iraq.
