  • People walk amid debris in Lee County Ala. after what appeared to be a tornado struck in the area Sunday

While the destruction was evident, people were uncertain of what the storm's label meant.

The most powerful was an EF4 tornado blamed for killing 23 people in Beauregard, Alabama, as it travelled roughly 70 miles (112 kilometres) on a path that also left a trail of destruction in western Georgia.

This storm brought the highest tornado death toll in the United States since 2013, according to the National Weather Service.

These latest tornadoes appear to have caused the highest death toll since 35 people were killed in Arkansas and MS in April 2014.

The tornado, with 170 miles per hour (270 kph) winds, left a path of destruction almost a mile wide.

Forecasters ranked the worst of the outbreak at step four of the six-step Enhanced Fujita scale of tornado strength.

"It's just devastating to see this", Morrison said.

Deeply saddened to learn of the tragic loss of life and the injuries caused by the tornado which struck Alabama in recent days, His Holiness Pope Francis expresses heartfelt solidarity with all affected by this natural disaster. "He is for many a messianic figure, which is unbelievable - 'No need for Jesus, we have Donald, '" Flynt said.

On Sunday, Troy Bell saw the tornado and quickly gathered his family to huddle in the bathtub.

The tracks of the two storms are less than a mile apart in some spots, with the stronger storm rolling through the region at about 2 pm Sunday afternoon (local time), and the second following close on its heels, coming close to partially overlapping the initial twister's path.

"I know that Auburn and its leadership both in athletics and the university are working diligently right now to form some action plans to be able to respond, not only short-term but long-term to help our community to rebuild and to heal", Pearl said, via WVTM. Alabama search and rescue teams on Tuesday were combing through the wreckage of houses flatted by weekend tornadoes, looking for seven or eight people still unaccounted for in the wake of the deadliest USA twister outbreak since 2013.

In a news release Tuesday night, Trump approved a federal disaster declaration and ordered federal aid to assist state and local recovery efforts.

"This is a hard time for the state of Alabama, but knowing that we have this additional assistance, and the support of our president and folks across the country, we will get through this together", Ivey said, according to the Opelika-Auburn News.
