May said the government would not instruct her Conservative Party's MPs how to vote on its motion.

A no-deal departure would cause chaos at the border and trigger at least a short-term economic shock.

Voting against leaving without a deal and for extension does not solve the problems we face.

If no deal was agreed by March 20, "then it is highly likely the European Council at its meeting the following day would require a clear objective for any extension, not least to determine its length, and any extension beyond 30 June 2019 would require the United Kingdom to hold European Parliament elections in May 2019", the motion said. Juncker on Monday said Brexit "should be complete before the European elections" at the end of May.

Meanwhile, Danish Prime Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said he would "intensify" his country's no-deal preparations.

Mrs May has angered pro-Brexit members of her party by backing the delay with some telling The Sun a split in the party could not be avoided.

"We regret the outcome of tonight's vote", the spokesperson said.

Theresa May has held out the prospect of a third "meaningful vote" on her EU Withdrawal Agreement within the next week after MPs dramatically voted to rule out a no-deal Brexit.

But Corbyn said that nothing of substance had changed, calling May's revised deal "a blindfold Brexit".

It is also now set in the UK's European Union (Withdrawal) Act 2018, which cancels the operation of EU law in the United Kingdom, as being the date of "exit day" (this would have to be amended if there is an agreement to extend).

"I think it is still alive, I do", Ms Truss told BBC Radio 4's PM.

After the 149-vote rejection of her Withdrawal Agreement on Tuesday, Mrs May suffered a second defeat in as many days when MPs backed a cross-party amendment rejecting a no-deal Brexit under any circumstances.

That defeat is what has led to such unpredictable times.

She said there are now three tough questions for the Commons to answer.

How long would the extension to Article 50 be?

A headline in the French newspaper Liberation said Brexit is "back to square one", while German broadcaster n-tv noted "disappointment and incomprehension in Brussels". "Or does it want to leave with a deal, but not this deal?" she asked.

A spokesman for European Council President Donald Tusk, representing EU governments, said Britain would have to provide a "credible justification" for any request for a delay.

The impasse in London has also caused huge frustration in Brussels, and European Union leaders have now warned they can not agree a delay until MPs say what they want.

"An extension, where we go beyond the European elections, and the European elections will be hijacked by the Brexiters", said Verhofstadt.

Europe's chief Brexit negotiator, Michel Barnier, sat down for an exclusive interview with Euronews' Daniel Cohn Bendit on Wednesday to discuss the possibility.

Mrs May clinched legally binding Brexit assurances from the bloc in a last-ditch attempt to win over rebellious British MPs who have threatened to vote down her divorce deal again.

So I really don't see how Geoffrey Cox could drop his formal legal advice of last November that "the protocol [which contains the backstop] would endure indefinitely until a superseding agreement took its place" and the "Withdrawal Agreement cannot provide a legal means of compelling the European Union to conclude such an agreement".
