Captain Marvel nearly made her debut in this MCU movie

Full disclosure compels me to confess that I am an over-40 "white dude". Even digitally processed, Jackson has so much charisma that he owns the screen every time he's present and his interactions with Goose the Cat are unquestionably some of the highlights - and most amusing moments - of Captain Marvel.

Even casual Marvel Cinematic Universe fans remember how the latest Avengers movie ended.

"Jen Bartel, a comic book artist who does work for Marvel, helped design the sneaker and shared the news on her Twitter account yesterday, writing "#JenBartelxAdidas #HigherFurtherFaster #CaptainMarvel". What keeps it from being a complete throwback are thoroughly modern CGI space scenes interspersed with less elaborate locations like a strip mall, a bland file room, and an empty roadside bar.

Opening with a bang, we meet "Vers" (Brie Larson) on an alien world. She takes an Earth name, because Vers sounds silly. There are lots of one-liners, but attempts at convincing melodrama come up short. Because Captain Marvel isn't just that good of a character.

Directed by indie film-making duo Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, Captain Marvel is the 21st instalment in the series of Marvel blockbusters that began with 2008's Iron Man. The choice seems to have paid off. Too many scenes that should be thrilling (a "French Connection"-lite car-and-elevated-train chase, and a "Star Wars"-style canyon dogfight), frightening (Carol undergoing enhanced interrogation aboard an enemy spacecraft) or awe-inspiring (when her full powers kick in) are energetic but generic". So do her scientific mentor and her best friend, also women. And things like a homey heart-to-heart exposition dump in a dining room are just boring.

"We are just focused on ours".

Larson's energy, at first, is powered by a precocious kid-sister vibe, disobeying the rules but charming her way out of trouble.

Amaryllis Fox was in her previous year as an undergraduate at Oxford studying theology and worldwide law when her writing mentor Daniel Pearl was captured and beheaded.

'Captain Marvel' flies into Marvel's elevated expectations

The Skrulls are shape-shifting aliens who can hide in plain sight. Like Mystique of the X-Men, they somehow can transform their appearance to impersonate everything about anyone instantly-clothes, glasses, and all.

There are also some issues with character motivation that would be hard to unpack without landing on Planet Spoiler; suffice to say if you have a BS detector (I believe the Marvel-approved term is Spidey sense), it may be quivering at some point.

Despite featuring the Marvel Cinematic Universe's first woman lead character, Captain Marvel sticks to the overarching franchise formula. On the small side, it's a shame that the way Fury loses an eye is reduced to a bad throwaway gag.

Danvers, as a character, and Larson as an actress, fail to deliver in terms of relatability and likeability in comparison to the rest of the MCU's stable, which is a concern considering the position of Captain Marvel in the next phase of the MCU which she apparently will lead a whole host of young 'uns set to take over post-Thanos.

Wolfe wrote at The Wrap that, "Brie Larson is a ideal fit for Carol, who begins the film as Vers, a Kree soldier being trained by Yon-Rogg (Jude Law) to control her emotions to become a better fighter". Note: this will probably only impact MCU diehards - but be reminded of when in the timeline was S.H.I.E.L.D. first referenced in the movies, and the journey of the Tessaract. The Kree, who are led by an AI called Supreme Intelligence (perfectly represented by Annette Bening), are at war with the reptilian, shapeshifting Skrull, who are led by the slippery Talos (an impish Ben Mendelsohn). She also reconnects with her Earth BFF Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch) and Maria's cute-as-a-button 11yo daughter Monica (Akira Akbar).

Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson).

From both a toy-selling and a storytelling standpoint, the fact that the movie's title character never is referred to by anyone as "Captain Marvel" is odd, but not unprecedented.

Indeed, Wonder Woman is the sticking point for many critics. Lee, who died past year at age 95, also is featured briefly as himself in an early scene, doing something humorously era-specific. "The picture is not boring, exactly, just mundane, marked by unimaginative plotting, cut-rate villains, a bland visual style and a lack of elan in every department", wrote Todd McCarthy of the Hollywood Reporter, while the Associated Press' Lindsey Bahr noted, "The first female-led movie of the MCU deserved more".
