  • Google Patches Zero-Day Flaw in Chrome Under Active Attacks

Although the auto-update feature in Chrome installs the new code, it does not mean that the effects are also enforced.

Another day, another major security hole is found in a widely used piece of software. The exact details of the zero-day vulnerability have not yet been disclosed, but it's presumably a big deal.

If you're using Google's Chrome browser and have not yet upgraded to the latest available version, do so now or risk being hit by attackers.

What this means is that if your Google Chrome version is as seen in the image above, it is not enough to benefit from the latest fix.

The attackers were using a combination of a Chrome and Windows 7 zero-days to execute malicious code and take over vulnerable systems.

Google Chrome's security lead, Justin Schuh, revealed the urgency of the situation this week when calling on users to update their browsers "right this minute".

San Francisco: After discovering a critical bug in the earlier version of the Chrome browser, Google issued a warning. The flaw, known as CVE-2019-5786, is considered a high-severity security issue, according to Google. At this point, details of the vulnerability are scant, as Google said it's restricting access to bug details until a majority of users have installed the update. "For most users, the update download is automatic, but restart is a usually a manual action". Google stated that the security flaw was to do with a memory management error in the browsers FileReader API which allows web apps to read files that are present on a user's computer. Google has acknowledged the existence of exploits using this vulnerability already existing in the wild.
