  • Google Releases Android Q Beta for Developers, Early Adopters

Android Q Beta 1 isn't available only for developers.

Starting in Android Q, apps can request a Dynamic Depth image which consists of a JPEG, XMP metadata related to depth related elements, and a depth and confidence map embedded in the same file on devices that advertise support. The feature is reportedly missing in the first beta. This might not be a groundbreaking feature, but it's still nice to have and it adds one more reason to why Android fans might want to purchase a Pixel smartphone instead of one made by OEMs. And of course, so Android enthusiasts can have the pride of knowing they're using the latest bleeding edge software.

The operating system also allows users to control apps' access to their photos, videos, and other files. Google says that apps can either use their own sandbox to store data or in "common collections". You can change settings in the floating UI while staying in the app.

Unfortunately, a recent analysis found that some advertisers have been bypassing this system by tracking identifiers that can't be changed such as Android device ID and IMEI number.

With Android Q, you have a few seconds after an app has been removed to undo the change.

Numerous previously announced features for foldable phones like the Galaxy Fold are also built into Android Q. For developers, that means supporting new paused and resumed states that allow multiple apps to work on a larger display.

Google this week officially announced the first beta of Android 10 Q available for their Pixel devices.

Long pressing the power button will now give you an option to contact emergency services with Android Q, as per The Verge.

Settings panels allows quick access to settings that'd otherwise be available in the device's main Settings interface. Although don't turn ON battery saver all the time as it reduces the performance of the phone and you even might not get notifications on time. Developers will be able to register sharing shortcuts with the system so they will populate instantly.

What's new in Android Q beta? As foldable smartphones are the next-in-line in flagship devices, Android Q has been added with the capability to support them and also provide additional enhancements for a seamless two-screen or multi-screen experience.

Interestingly, you can grab the first Android Q beta release through the Android Beta program - just enroll your device here and then you'll receive the build over-the-air.

There will be six betas of Android Q in total, above you can see Google's timeline for these. Don't do this out of casual interest, especially since future betas figure to be more stable.

Download and install the Google USB driver from here. Without enrolling in the beta, you won't be able to download updates, so you'll have to flash your phone every time Google updates the software.
