The next major winter storm is whipping through the central US with blizzard conditions in six states.

On Wednesday, 100 vehicles were involved in an accident on Interstate 25 near Wellington, Colorado, according to Wellington Fire Protection. "High speed in poor driving conditions is being investigated as a possible causal factor". Some 85,000 people, mostly in the Denver area, were still without electricity Thursday. FEMA Region 8 - which covers Colorado, Montana, the Dakotas and Wyoming - advised residents to have a 3-day supply food/water, battery-powered radio, flashlights and portable chargers on hand for the expected power outages associated with the wind gusts up to 75-80 miles per hour in the region.

In the transition zone between the warm and cold sectors of the storm, the combination of downpours and melting snow poses flooding concerns in eastern Nebraska and Minnesota, southeast South Dakota, Iowa, Wisconsin and northern MI.

About 50 National Guard soldiers and airmen used specialized vehicles with tank-like treads to rescue 75 people stranded in their cars during the storm. While Colorado is seeing blizzard conditions, Iowa and IL are experiencing flooding, especially in areas along the Mississippi River. A record-setting 129km/h gust was reported at Denver International Airport, which was shut down for the vast majority of air traffic.

The NWS said while the storm will gradually weaken over the next few days, strong winds will continue before "a taste of spring temperatures" will be felt sometime Friday. "We're pleased by how our forecasters handled it, and the media has been great in getting the word out", he said.

'We expect a major blizzard to unfold with winds likely to approach hurricane force, heavy snow and massive drifts, ' according to AccuWeather meteorologist Alex Sosnowski.

Blizzard conditions remained a danger in the northeastern part of Colorado as of late Wednesday night. Severe storms capable of producing damaging winds, hail, and tornadoes is forecast from the southern Plains and into the Mississippi River Valley.

In Colorado, the storm turned deadly when a State Patrol corporal was struck and killed by a vehicle while he was outside helping a auto that slid off of Interstate 76 in Weld County, Colorado, AccuWeather reported.

At 8:30 a.m. officials with the county announced both Dillon Dam and Swan Mountain roads are closed due to adverse weather conditions. "The snow will start mid-morning, but the worst of it will be from mid-afternoon (Wednesday) and overnight into Thursday".
