India riled after China blocks United Nations resolution on Pakistan terror group listing

  • Masood Azhar who is in Pakistan is wanted in India for terror strikes including the suicide bombing in Kashmir

France has chose to freeze the assets of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) founder and leader Masood Azhar, the French government said on Friday.

A leading American lawmaker has expressed disappointment that China has once again blocked at the UNSC the designation of Jaish-e-Mohammad chief Masood Azhar as a global terrorist, saying Beijing has had "ample opportunity" to fulfil its worldwide obligation.

The Pakistan-based terrorist group claimed responsibility for the February 14 suicide auto bombing in Indian-administered Kashmir that killed 40 members of its security forces, bringing the volatile nations to the brink of a full-blown war.

India was riled after China blocked a United Nations move to list the leader of a militant organisation in Kashmir as a global terrorist.

The comment piece advised New Delhi to resort to quiet diplomacy instead of extensively directing aggressive rhetoric to pressurize Beijing, the Azhar issue could have been better addressed.

In recent weeks, as global pressure has risen over Pakistan's ties to terror groups, Islamabad has scrambled to show it is taking action against them - closing almost 200 religious schools and arresting dozens of individuals linked to militancy.

In the highly surcharged pre-election scenario in India, the Opposition instantly pointed out the Modi government's "diplomatic disaster" with Congress party leader Mr Rahul Gandhi tweeting "Swing with Xi in Gujarat, Hug Xi in Delhi, Bow to Xi in China".

"Thus, we have secured an unprecedented support from the worldwide community for listing of Masood Azhar under the UN Sanctions Committee", she said. Has Modi government's diplomatic overtures with China failed?

On Tuesday, China had said that "responsible and serious discussions" were needed ahead of the UNSC's sanctions committee meeting. This is the fourth time Beijing has thwarted the move to designate Azhar a global terrorist under the 1267 Al Qaeda Sanctions Committee of the UNSC. Just before the deadline, China put a "technical hold" on the proposal seeking "more time to examine" it. The Chinese decision has disappointed India and the USA, the UK, France and Germany that had backed the proposal.

"Why is Rahul Gandhi in a celebratory mood when India stands "pained" by China blocking Masood Azhar's name in the UNSC?"

The original mistake, both on Kashmir and China, was committed by the same person, he added.

Leading the effort, France asserted that it has always been by India's side in the fight against terrorism. China blocks India's membership of Nuclear Suppliers Group asking for parity with rogue Pakistan.

Taking the issue to the Security Council for an open discussion and vote is also an option which could publicly shame the Chinese for their support to the leader of a UN-designated terrorist group.
