  • Rafael Nadal 'I cannot guarantee you I will face Roger Federer'

The Spaniard's right knee flared up in the second set of his 7-6 (2), 7-6 (2) victory over Karen Khachanov in Friday's quarter-finals.

"I'm actually shaking right now", Andreescu told reporters.

"Still tough because I felt more or less OK during this beginning of the season in terms of my knee", he said. Dominic Thiem recorded unforced errors as nil in the first set.

Thiem gained the first break of the match for a 3-2 lead in the third and after saving the only break point he faced all day as he served for the match wrapped it up with a sparkling backhand volley.

Thiem has never won a Masters 1000 title, losing in two previous finals. "His serve is just unreal so even though I played fantastic it was so close the first two sets".

His run at the first Grand Slam of the year marked his return to competition for the first time since a similar knee problem forced him to retire from his US Open semi-final against Juan Martin del Potro in September. His career record against Thiem is 2-2, with Federer winning both of their meetings on hard courts.

While Federer floated into Sunday's Indian Wells men's final (ESPN2, following women's final at 4 p.m. ET) without dropping a set all tournament, his two greatest rivals sputtered.

"It was so many emotions going through my head", she said. "I know the anticipation is there from the crowd and also us players. So was this our chance at a last one - I hope not and I believe at the level he's playing and the level I'm still going there's definitely going to be more".

I'm just happy to be in the semi-finals.

He underwent surgery on his ankle to remove an intra-articular loose body in November and only resumed training in December. Sometimes it's tough and it can be frustrating for me personally going through all this stuff.

The Spanish superstar, who has battled knee tendinitis and other injuries throughout his career, confirmed he won't compete at next week's Miami Masters, targeting a return to competition at Monte Carlo from April 14-21 instead.
