Speaker Pelosi Revokes Vice President Pence's House Office Space

  • Nancy Pelosi says impeaching Donald Trump 'just not worth it'

No effort should be made to impeach US President Donald Trump unless the reasons are overwhelming and bipartisan, given how divisive it would be for the country, US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said in a Washington Post interview published on Monday.

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff sided with Pelosi, who said Democrats shouldn't pursue impeachment unless there's overwhelming and bipartisan support for doing so.

"I'm not for impeachment", she told the Washington Post.

Majority Leader Steny Hoyer and Democratic Caucus Chair Hakeem Jeffries both said that leadership doesn't plan on blocking any member from bringing impeachment related resolutions to the floor for a vote and that it won't detract from the party's legislative agenda. In its absence, an impeachment partisan becomes a partisan exercise doomed for failure. Republicans later claimed a moral victory by saying that Clinton would be forever stained by the impeachment vote.

"We've got 62 new [Democratic] members", he said.

"Nancy Pelosi would have us believe this is some kind of evil, cold-hearted, right wing plot", Fox News contributor Deroy Murdock said during an interview on "Making Money with Charles Payne" Tuesday. Not impeaching Nixon would have meant condoning a President's use of federal agencies to obstruct an investigation.

If Ms Pelosi's intent was to push back on suggestions that Democrats were interested only in Mr Trump's scalp, her words also prompted concern from some in her party who argue that they should not worry about the political ramifications of holding Mr Trump accountable.

At the 2018 midterms, Democrats found success by largely ignoring Mr Trump - and his incendiary comments on issues like immigration - and campaigning on issues like healthcare. Her bottom line: "I'm not for impeachment". Just as during the Nixon years, the first step is congressional investigations (which we're seeing now), which then might lead to the opening of impeachment hearings.

Leaders within the Democratic Party, including House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler of NY and House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff of California, have suggested that the evidence against Trump is so obvious and strong that impeachment proceedings will just be a formality.

Pelosi's comments come after senior Democratic chairs have stepped up their probes of Trump's finances and the Trump White House.

Green said, "I don't like the way he puts that into policy, bigotry into policy". And while it's highly unlikely the GOP-run Senate would vote to convict Trump, that is also not a reason to hold back, Green says.

For moderate Democrats in swing districts fearful of accusations of partisan overreach, Ms Pelosi's cautious approach to impeachment has been a welcome dose of reality.

If we were to "normalize" impeachments in the House, it is hard to imagine that we would be able to make it any easier to reach across the aisle in the Senate and persuade senators to vote against a president who remains popular among his own partisans. But rather than taking these more nuanced tacks, she is, for all intents and purposes, taking impeachment off the table.

The most powerful Democrat in the country merely suggested that she doesn't think impeachment is the right course of action for the Democrats to take before the 2020 election, and with that the blue wolves turned on her and started sniping at her spiked heels.
