Tiger Woods has withdrawn from this week's Arnold Palmer Invitational in Florida with a neck strain.

Woods' first appearance at Bay Hill since 2013 generated record crowds and a massive spike in TV ratings.

Corey Conners is playing this week on the strength of his early season success. Woods finished tied for second at the Valspar previous year, and it seems as if he would come back if he could.

Roger Sloan made it into the field as an alternate on Monday after Patton Kizzire withdrew.

I'd like to send my regrets to the Palmer family and the Orlando fans.

It is shocking that he's missing Arnold Palmer's tournament at Bay Hill (of all places), but I don't necessarily think there are any alarms to sound. Instead of rest, and in a somewhat surprising decision, Woods travelled directly to Mexico to play in the WGC Mexico Championship.

Woods did not say how he suffered the neck strain but there was nothing about his play at the WGC-Mexico Championship, where he tied for 10th eight days ago, to suggest he was not healthy. Then comes the WCG Match Play tournament.

Can Woods claim a third Players Championship title?

Woods is expected by many to compete for majors this year.

Woods, 43, has had a long history of injuries, most recently coming back from a spinal fusion in his lower back. He did make sure to note that his injury is not considered long-term.

Last September, Woods got a rare taste of his old glory when he won the Tour Championship in Georgia - this after staging a comeback from four back surgeries.
