"While it is sad to lose such great people, this also creates opportunities for more great leaders who are energized about the path ahead to take on new and bigger roles", Zuckerberg said.

For the past two years, Facebook has been roiled by data scandals, a failure to police its service, and a major shift in strategy to focus on privacy. Chris Cox was responsible for Facebook's flagship apps - including WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook itself.

"As Mark has outlined, we are turning a new page in our product direction, focused on an encrypted, interoperable, messaging network".

Will Cathcart was announced as the new lead on WhatsApp, while Zuckerberg, apparently consolidating power as he prepares to merge the apps in some way or another, states he does "not plan on immediately appointing anyone to fill Chris's role in the near term".

Cox's bombshell comes just one week after Zuckerberg announced that Facebook would become a "privacy-focused" company.

Daniels had informed the company several months ago of his intention to leave and will stay on through a leadership transition, a person familiar with the matter said.

During the previous year, Facebook has seen a steady stream of executives depart following the Cambridge Analytica data scandal, including its chief security officer Alex Stamos, head of communications and public policy Elliot Schrage, WhatsApp founder and CEO Jan Koum and more recently, Instagram founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger. And growing viewership and advertising on videos are of growing importance to both the Facebook and WhatsApp apps.

That effort will include introducing WhatsApp encryption technology to Facebook's Messenger app and Instagram's messaging option. It's a huge job for Zuckerberg and all the leaders of Facebook's apps, so it's not going to be an easy job for anyone involved. He also gives the company's orientation to new hires every Monday morning.

He's joined on his way out the door by Chris Daniels, Vice President of WhatsApp.

In his blog post, Zuckerberg said that Cox had told him that he planned to move on several years ago, but that Cox chose to hold off on leaving until the company made more progress combating misinformation and Russian meddling - controversies that erupted in the wake of the 2016 election.
