US Might Punish Germany For Using Huawei

Germany's Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy said that it had received the respective letter from the United States authorities.

The U.S. has additional concerns about the use of Chinese personnel, such as whether Huawei will allow oversight from security services, according to the paper.

A U.S. campaign to scare European allies away from using Chinese telecommunications equipment went up in flames over the past several months, most recently evidenced by Germany's decision last week not to ban the gear from its next-generation wireless network.

The U.S. has apparently warned Germany that if Chinese tech companies such as Huawei help build the country's new 5G telecom infrastructure, U.S. agencies might not share as much intelligence with the German government as they now do.

"But he added that the US position on 5G network security is well known".

The Wall Street Journal noted Grenell's letter is the first time the USA government has expressly threatened repercussions for American allies that purchase Huawei equipment.

The move would shake up Germany's security sector, which relies on intelligence from the NSA, CIA, and other American agencies.

Grenell, in a letter dated last Friday, told Germany's economics minister that secure communications systems are crucial for intelligence cooperation, and that firms like Huawei or other Chinese firms could compromise these safety standards.

Reportedly, Huawei has no plans to sue the Australian government, for now.

As CNN noted, the USA has pushed for the "UK, Australia, Poland, the European Union, the Philippines and a slew of other countries" to impose bans or restrictions on Huawei products, which correlated with a ban in Australia and partial bans in New Zealand.

In recent weeks, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo made several indirect warnings about Huawei equipment, which Washington says is used to spy for the Chinese government (an allegation the company denies). And other countries have issued security warnings about Huawei and China, including the Czech Republic and Lithuania.

Amidst the assurance of German that the risk involving Huawei can be contained, Grenell said in the letter that the Chinese government could legally compel any Chinese company to assist them in their operations without checks and balance, and therefore, the risks cannot be mitigated.
