President Donald Trump has issued the first veto of his presidency, overruling Congress to protect his emergency declaration for border wall funding.

The Senate voted Thursday by a margin of 59 to 41 to block Trump's declaration that an emergency on the border with Mexico requires the construction of a wall, a project for which Congress has not appropriated money.

President Donald Trump on Friday vetoed legislation attempting to strike down his declaration of a national emergency at the southern border during an Oval Office event from the White House.

Trump declared the national emergency after signing a government funding agreement that did not include the money he requested to build a wall.

Still, a White House official said Trump won't forget when senators who opposed him want him to attend fundraisers or provide other help.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi assembled a bipartisan group to reverse the national emergency despite threats that Trump would veto it when it reached his desk.

"The House and Senate resoundingly rejected the president's lawless power grab, yet the president has chosen to continue to defy the Constitution, the Congress and the will of the American people", she said in a statement.

"I'd like to thank all of the Great Republican Senators who bravely voted for Strong Border Security and the WALL", Trump tweeted ahead of his veto action.

"The fact that this is an emergency is undeniable", Nielsen said. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, told reporters.

If he [the president] approve he shall sign it, but if not he shall return it, with his Objections to that House in which it shall have originated, who shall enter the Objections at large on their Journal, and proceed to reconsider it.

"I think the basic premise of Mike [Lee's] bill is correct", Republican Senator Jerry Moran said Thursday.

Trump made a border wall a central promise of his 2016 campaign for the White House.

On Friday, Barr also said the president's emergency order was "clearly authorized under the law". He cited "thousands and thousands" of gang arrests and claimed numerous asylum seekers released into the US were "stone-cold killers", ignoring data that shows immigrants are less likely to commit crime. For months, there was a stalemate between Congress and Trump that partially shut down the government for 35 days, the longest shutdown in us history. He initially insisted that Mexico would pay for the wall but it has declined to do so.
