What can Arsenal expect from Napoli in the Europa League quarter-finals?

  • Napoli beat Red Bull Salzburg 4-3 on aggregate in the Europa League last 16

Both Chelsea and Arsenal were drawn away from home in the first leg before returning to London for the second contest.

Down 3-1 after the first leg at Stade Rennais, the Gunners needed to score at least two goals at home to beat the French club and advance to the quarterfinals of the Europa League on aggregate.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles added Arsenal's 2nd goal just 10 minutes later, after a cross from Aubameyang following some excellent work out wide found the head of the onrushing full-back.

Prior to the Gunners' victory, Chelsea completed their progression to the last eight of this season's Europa League, which was done in style with a convincing 5-0 thrashing of Dynamo Kyiv.

Arsenal boss Unai Emery however has excellent pedigree in the competition, winning three back-to-back titles with former club Sevilla between 2014 and 2016.

This is not the first time Aubameyang has celebrated in this fashion - he pulled on a Spiderman mask several times after scoring while at previous club Borussia Dortmund.

What does it mean? There's a long way to go but with performances like that, we can compete.

Petr Cech, in what could have been the Czech great's last game before retiring at the end of the season had Arsenal not progressed, turned M'Baye Niang's shot from outside the area onto the post.

Benfica, who dropped down from the UCL after finishing third behind Bayern Munich and AFC Ajax in their Champions League group, will face Bundesliga outfit Eintracht Frankfurt who sent Serie A giants Inter Milan packing in the Round of 16. He should have had a hat-trick, too, missing two late chances to secure the match ball.

Addressing those faults is among the next issues for Emery to address, but for now he has his team heading in the right direction after stepping into the shoes of an iconic figure - with Wenger having moved on after 22 years at the Arsenal helm.
